Binary Arithmetic
- Promoted by Gottfreid Leibniz from 1679. Leibniz foresaw that
binary calculations would be simpler for machines
- Nearly all early mechanical and electrical calculating
machines were decimal, e.g. ENIAC
- A few were binary, notably the Z1-Z4 developed in 1938-45 in
Germany by Konrad Zuse (7-bit exponent, 16-bit mantissa, 1-bit
sign)
- Binary encoding promote in USA by Von Neumann et al.
